SubOptic 2001 is the largest international conference and exhibition to be held on the entire information and telecommunication industry. Its focus is primarily on the submarine optical-fiber cable network. Held once every four years, it is held in countries around the world. This year, 2001, the fourth SubOptic 2001 was held in Kyoto.
There are various international conferences that have optical fibers as their theme such as ECOC that makes its round of European countries; OFC which is held in the U.S.A.; and the OECC which is held in the Asian region. Of all these conferences, SubOptic is the most widely known for its focus on submarine cables and by the fact that it has a long tradition in this area, is the largest conference of its type and is based on a non-profit policy. It is also known as a conference where numerous state-of-the-art technologies and researches are introduced.
The conference/exhibition was attended by over 1,000 people from enterprises related to submarine cables and telecommunications, and research institutes from both within Japan and overseas. Here, the latest technology was introduced while discussions by the world's leading managers and analysts were held. Through these activities, the submarine optical-fiber cable, the key to the large-capacity network of the Internet age, has been examined in detail from both the technological and business perspectives and the future direction and form of this field in the 21st century highlighted.
